The History of the Crane-Phillips House
The Crane-Phillips House began as an East Jersey farmhouse and took on its Victorian cottage character after the Phillips family renovated it. Cranford’s historic-preservation document says most of the house was built in 1867 for Henry and Cecilia Phillips; the parlor is older.
The Phillips family lived there from 1867 to 1911 and owned the property until 1927. On February 17 of that year, the house became the Cranford Historical Society’s first headquarters.
It was placed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places in 1997, and the society says it was named an “American Treasure” in 1999 by the White House and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The house stands beside the Rahway River, near the 18th-century river crossing at Crane’s Mills. Its story connects the home’s architectural changes with Cranford’s local history and the society that preserves it.
